Runway to Real Way: Suit It Your Way
Suit It Your Way
It’s impossible to ignore the chic femme suiting trend this fall – suits are everywhere from Alexander McQueen to Oak + Fort. Bold, clean lines, nipped waists and statement hues are in, it’s just a question of how best to wear them. For some, the idea of wearing a suit evokes 1980s visuals of shoulder pads or boxy shapes, but this season has a variation for everybody, and every body.
This year’s “Suit It Your Way” scene at the Trend Takeover Runway Show was a menagerie of embellished collars, skinny ties and fabulous tailoring. Here are a few ideas to take the suit from the runway to your everyday wardrobe.
Option 1: All Business
When styled properly, a tailored suit can be as flattering as an evening gown. Your base layer tells the story: lower-cut or collarless shirts put the focus on the blazer, while statement collars and ties draw attention up and make the look uniquely yours. A softer blouse can feminize the aesthetic, while a crisp button-up is all business. Accessorize a classic with a classic: high heels and a timeless bag complete the look.

Option 2: Change It Up
As Fashion Producer Terri Morgan likes to say, “there are no fashion rules that can’t be broken with great style.” Who says a suit has to be a blazer, an ankle-length pant and a dress shoe? It can just as easily include a combat boot, a blazer vest, a cropped top, or even a jumpsuit. If a piece of the overall look doesn’t feel like “you,” swap it out for something that does. You just might love the results.

Option 3: Skirt Styles
The overlap of dresses and blazers has been a building trend for a few seasons now, and while skirt suits are nothing new, there is definitely something to be said for their appearance this season. From dresses that look like blazers, to blazers worn as dresses, to skirt and blazer pairings, there’s no question that this trend is a power look.
